Last year we added a patio off of the back of our house. It was needed, there was an old concrete pad but it was in pretty bad shape. I love the way the patio turned out, but aside from the concrete, we haven't really done much with the space. We spend A LOT of time outside, so it is really important that we have a space that is comfortable and inviting. Here is a current picture of the space mostly cleared off. Although we do have furniture that we will keep using, I haven't included it in the photos. I will along the way though.
This before picture is pretty bad. In all honesty, it actually usually looks a lot better than this but the worse the before the better the after right? We have this small metal frame pergola with a fabric canopy. This area gets a LOT of sun, so this small pergola with fabric is NOT cutting it. The fabric is such a hassle and holds water when it rains. We've decided that what this space really needs is to be fully covered. We will add a vaulted overhang that ties into the roof. We are planning on having tongue and groove ceilings with fans and recessed lighting like the inspiration photo above. We also plan on extending the concrete patio another five feet or so to accommodate a dining area. For now, we are going to continue to use the furniture we already have and will just be buying the dining portion. Eventually I would also LOVE to have a dutch door put in, but that will have to wait. The furniture isn't terrible, but it isn't my favorite. Here is a design concept for the space using similar furniture to what we currently own. I've already purchased the metal bistro chairs from overstock for a crazy deal. I took advantage of the 4th of July sales going on and was able to save a lot. I am planning on ordering the outdoor table from Ikea for another great deal pretty soon. Still searching for the right outdoor rug, which might have to wait since I plan on changing out the furniture in the near future.
More than anything, I'm really just excited about having a more functional outdoor space. Having an almost two year old little boy means we are outside practically all day unless it is too hot, too rainy, or too cold. Adding a TV will be nice too... especially with football season coming up. We like to entertain and enjoy having our neighbors over often. We haven't really been able to do much of that since moving here two years ago. Our old house had a fabulous outdoor space with a cozy fireplace and we loved spending so much time out there. Construction is set to start this week. Hopefully this project will be finished within the month! I'll try to come back and post some of the progress along the way.
